Phil's comments and analysis:
The Highway Q.C.'s existed for many decades after their formation in the 1940s at Highway Baptist Church in Chicago. There was flow of some members between this group, the Holy Wonders, and the Soul Stirrers. Both Sam Cooke and Lou Rawls spent time in the group but, starting in the mid-1950s, Spencer Taylor (formerly of the Holy Wonders gospel group) was the lead.
